How Much Does a Hall Bathroom Remodel Cost in Tampa Bay?

Home › Blog › Bathroom Remodeling from $17k › How Much Does a Hall Bathroom…

The short answer: with Bayshore Remodels, a hall bathroom remodel starts at $17,000 when you choose and supply the tile and fixtures. When we supply every material, plan on $21,000 and up. Keeping the tub and redoing everything around it usually lands between $17,000 and $21,000. Converting the tub to a tiled walk-in shower with glass usually lands between $23,000 and $28,000. Below is what drives those numbers, how a tiled shower is actually built, and where the money goes in a typical conversion.

What counts as a hall bath?

A hall bath is the secondary bathroom off a hallway: usually around 5 by 8 feet, one vanity, one toilet and a tub with a shower head over it. It’s the bathroom kids and guests use, so durability and easy cleaning matter more here than in a primary bath. Because the room is small, a lot of the cost is fixed: the demolition crew, plumber, tile setter, drywall finisher and electrician each still have to show up and do their part whether the room is 40 or 60 square feet.

The two most common hall bath projects

Keep the tub, redo everything around it: $17,000 to $21,000

If the tub is in good shape, it stays. The walls around it are taken down and retiled with new waterproofing, and the room gets a new valve, vanity, toilet, floor tile, lighting, fan, drywall and paint. This is the most common hall bath we do.

Convert the tub to a walk-in shower: $23,000 to $28,000

The tub comes out, the drain moves to the shower position, and a tiled shower is built from the slab up with glass. It costs more because there is a new shower floor to build and waterproof, plumbing to move and a glass door to add. The breakdown below is this project.

How a tiled shower is actually built

This is the part of a bathroom you never see once it’s finished, and it’s where cheap quotes cut corners. Here is the order we build in:

  1. Demo to the studs. The old tub, tile and wall board come out completely. We never tile over old walls.
  2. Plumbing rough-in. The drain is moved to the new shower position and the new valve is set at the right height.
  3. The shower pan. The floor is built up and sloped toward the drain so water never sits.
  4. Cement board on the walls. A water-resistant backer goes up in place of drywall inside the shower.
  5. Waterproofing. A waterproof membrane goes over the pan and walls and is sealed at every seam, corner and niche. This is what actually keeps water out of your walls.
  6. Tile. Wall tile first, then the shower floor tile, then the bathroom floor.
  7. Grout and seal, then glass is measured and installed once the tile is finished.

Where the money goes in a tub-to-shower conversion

Here is how a typical conversion in a standard 5 by 8 hall bath breaks down. Your bathroom will be different, but this shows where the money goes.

  • The shower itself: $13,000 to $15,000. Building the shower from the slab up with full waterproofing, a new shower valve and trim, moving the drain from the tub spot, a recessed niche, and frameless glass. This is the biggest piece, and the part you never want done cheaply.
  • The rest of the room: $6,000 to $7,500. Demolition and haul-off, floor tile, vanity, sink and toilet installation, drywall, insulation and paint, a vent fan, lighting, accessories and cleanup.
  • Your selections: $3,000 to $4,500 for mid-range choices. Tile is where people get surprised, because a shower uses three tiles: wall tile, a smaller accent tile for the shower floor so it can follow the slope to the drain, and the tile for the bathroom floor. Add the shower trim kit, vanity, faucet, toilet, mirror, light and accessories. You can supply any of these yourself, or choose higher-end pieces and the number moves accordingly.

Most conversions like this land between $23,000 and $28,000.

Small choices that add up

None of these are bad choices. They just add up, so it’s worth knowing the number before you say yes:

  • Swapping one ceiling light for two recessed can lights: two new can lights, the wiring to them, and patching and painting the ceiling where the old fixture was. Usually several hundred dollars in all.
  • A lighted mirror: a few hundred dollars, because it needs its own power run.
  • A shower bench: a few hundred dollars.
  • A curbless, no-step shower: a few thousand dollars more, because the slab has to be cut down.
  • Adding a vent fan where there isn’t one: under $1,000 with the new vent run.
  • Sliding glass instead of a swing door: a little more than a swing door.

What makes a hall bath cost less

  • Keeping the tub if it’s in good shape.
  • Keeping the drain, valve and vanity where they are.
  • Simple tile in a straight layout.
  • A shower curtain instead of glass in a kids’ bath.
  • Supplying your own fixtures, as long as they’re on site before the trades need them.

Why one quote is half the price of another

A low bathroom quote usually skips the parts you can’t see: taking the shower to the studs, a real waterproofing membrane, a properly sloped pan, insulation, the permit or the cleanup. Those are the parts that decide whether a shower leaks in five years. Ask every contractor to walk you through their shower build, step by step.

Is a hall bath remodel with us right for you?

If you want a complete, permitted hall bath done properly, our projects start at $17,000. If you only need one small piece done, like a regrout or a new toilet, a full remodel may not be the right fit. Ask us; we’ll tell you honestly what makes sense and refer someone we trust if it’s a single-trade job.

How long a hall bath takes

Most hall baths take three to four weeks of on-site work, a little longer with permits or custom glass. We order tile, vanity and fixtures before demolition so the room never sits gutted. See how long a bathroom remodel takes for the stage-by-stage timeline.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a hall bathroom remodel cost in Tampa Bay?

How much does it cost to convert a tub to a walk-in shower?

Usually $23,000 to $28,000 for a full hall bath conversion, including moving the drain, building and waterproofing the shower, glass and the rest of the room.

Why does a shower need three kinds of tile?

Wall tile for the shower walls, a small accent tile for the shower floor so it can follow the slope to the drain, and floor tile for the rest of the bathroom.

Is tile included in your price?

Tile installation is included. The tile itself is your selection, and you pay the real cost of what you choose.

Do I need a permit?

Moving a drain, valve or circuit requires a permit in Pinellas, Hillsborough and Pasco. Permitted work has to meet current code, which adds cost and protects you when you sell.
